The Dreams of Mice and Men essays "No matter how hard you try, you may never achieve your dreams." This shows that in the book, dreams don't tend to come true. In the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie, two men, are on a quest to try and achieve their dreams. George and Lennie work on a ranch where they meet others with dreams. However, all the characters soon face the reality that their dreams are never going to come true. Crook's dream to be accepted is ruined as people view him differently because of his skin color. Crooks' dream is to be accepted, to fit in and to not be lonely. One example of Crooks' dream is when Crooks was talking to George and he said, "A guy needs somebody- to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody" (69). This proves his dream because he says that a guy goes nuts if he doesn't have anyone. When Crooks refers to "a guy" he really is referring to himself. He is saying that he is lonely and he doesn't like it. That means that his dream is to not be lonely. It also means that he wants to fit in and be accepted because the reason he's lonely is because he is black. So in order to achieve his dream, he can't be black. However, Crooks dream is ruined because he is black and he can't change that. For example, when Crooks is talking to Lennie he says, "S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy cause you was black" (69). This proves that his dream can't come true because he is discriminated against because of his skin color and he is unable to achieve his dream because of this. Because the others won't let him play cards with them, he is unable to fit in and be accepted. In order to fit in, you need to be able to do the same things that others do, like play cards, however he is unable to do that because others won't give him the chance to fit in. Kepler was the first child born to a mercenary soldier and the daughter of an innkeeper.# The very same inn that Johannes stayed for much of his childhood after the age of five when his father left the family to fight in the Netherlands. Kepler’s early work at a nearby seminary got him enough recognition to honor a scholarship to the University of Tubingen.1 It was there that he was first introduced to the ideas of Copernicus, which he seemed to take a strong liking to right away. In one of his first published works while earning his way as a Mathematics teacher in Graz he was the first to defend Copernicus and his Copernican system. The theory that the planets revolve around the sun not the Earth was still being refuted by some of the more prominent thinkers of the time. His school was undoubtedly Lutheran, which also was the religion of his family so the connection was strong. He held fast to the Augsburg Confession of Lutheranism, but refused to sign the Formula of Concord because of his disagreement with some of the values listed in it.# This did not sit well with those in authority and Kepler was excluded from the sacrament in the Lutheran Church. He also refused to convert to Catholicism during this time which left him no side to take in the Thirty-Years War. This did not deter him from his faith and belief in God.

Image courtesy Gillian Foulger According to the original theory of hotspots, from 1971, hotspots represent mantle plumes—blobs of rising hot material from the base of the mantle—and make up a fixed framework independent of plate tectonics. Since that time, neither supposition has been confirmed, and the theory has been greatly adjusted. But the concept is simple and appealing, and the majority of specialists are still working inside the hotspot framework. Textbooks still teach it. The minority of specialists seeks to explain hotspots in terms of what I might call advanced plate tectonics: plate fracturing, counterflow in the mantle, melt-producing patches and edge effects. This map shows the hotspots listed in an influential 2003 paper by Vincent Courtillot and colleagues, which ranked them according to a set of five widely accepted criteria. The three sizes of symbols show whether the hotspots had high, medium or low scores against those criteria. Courtillot proposed that the three ranks correspond to an origin at the base of the mantle, the base of the transition zone at 660 kilometers depth, and the base of the lithosphere. There is no consensus on whether that view is valid, but this map is handy for showing the names and locations of the most commonly mentioned hotspots. Some hotspots  have obvious names, like Hawaii, Iceland and Yellowstone, but most are named for obscure ocean islands (Bouvet, Balleny, Ascension), or seafloor features that in turn got their names from famous research ships (Meteor, Vema, Discovery).
